While individuals and families facing foreclosure often feel frightened, alone, and discouraged, the Attorney General wants Ohioans to know the situation is not hopeless because help is available from a variety of public and private agencies. Of course, the fact that help is available doesn't do much good if people who need it don't know where to find it. To solve that problem we've set up this website featuring links to agencies that provide information and assistance to homeowners.
Because we recognize that people facing foreclosure are often desperate as well as discouraged, we want to caution against turning to "rescue" firms that promise to stop foreclosures for a fee. They can't. What they can and will do is bilk you out of money you may need to save your home. To learn more about foreclosure "rescue" firms click here. To file a consumer complaint click here.
Here's one other thing homeowners facing foreclosure cannot afford to do: Nothing. In order to have a chance to save your home you must act, and act quickly. Please contact the agencies below today. They want to help. But you must reach out to them. When you do, have all the information related to your situation at your fingertips, including letters from your mortgage lender, any deadlines that may have been set, and any documents you may have received from a court. And please be patient with those who are attempting to assist you. Foreclosures are complicated and every situation is different. The person on the other end of the phone is there to help. Please give them the opportunity to do so.
Along with the agencies listed on this page, the Attorney General's Help Center is open for your calls every weekday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until noon. If you have additional questions after reading this Web site, please call the Help Center at 1-877 AG 4 Ohio (1-877-244-6446).
Most importantly, don't give up. Help and hope are available.
